CBS Covers Hughes & Our Intent to Keep Hughes PROTECTED Open Space (for All!)
While the amount of content skewed toward the vocal bike park lobby, it was pretty clear from this CBS news story (below) that the bike park lobby is stretching the legislative intent of the word "recreation" for their own high-impact large-scale bike park that would only serve a few in our community, and would negatively impact Hughes and the sensitive ecotone along the adjacent protected areas.
“Recreation” in the ballot measure meant LOW-IMPACT, LOW-MAINTENANCE recreation, like a hiking trail, and the disc golf course and sledding hill that exists at Hughes now, which would more equitably serve members of our community. That’s what the thousands of people who we spoke with wanted and were happy with—protected open space with minimal impact!
Lastly, missing from the story is that (1) PATHS and its members and supporters fought to protect and preserve Hughes, ran the conservation ballot measure, and engaged with thousands of voters and residents; (2) the ballot measure's clear legislative intent; and (3) the blood, sweat and tears that former and current volunteers, community organizers and supporters have given for ~9 years (and counting) to Keep Hughes Open Space for All as publicly-owned open lands! As we know, protecting local publicly-owned open lands matters now more than ever.
